City of Spices

This wasn’t my first visit to the city, but like every other travel that includes visiting a place to either meet family or attend a wedding or being part of a birthday party have been the only reasons to visit the City of Spices, fondly known as Kozhikode aka Calicut. But this time was different, I was determined to experience what this place really has to offer !

I am not entirely certain why the name “City of Spices”, but what I saw and I believe is unique about this place was the food options and how passionate people are about showcasing their culinary mastery. It ranges from the authentic Kozhokodan style Biriyani preparation to an assorted variety of munchies, tidbits and refreshments to nibble on. Maybe its the absolute love for food that gave this city its name.

Then comes the most unforgettable experience that makes you want to go back to Calicut over and over… Its beaches.. Whilst Kerala, the state as such has a lot of beaches from north to south, Calicut has a whole other experience with its serene and clean beaches, one can never resist to take a dip in it. People there love the water and so does everyone who visit, so no one really judges you weather you jump in with your suit on, or choose to go for a swim.

Some of the shorelines are so addictive that you could spend hours sitting and enjoying the calmness of the land and the soft roar of the waves. The beach experience was an unmatched one. Your options to munch on something never ceases even by the beach, with an endless array of snacks and drinks (Sherbets).

Some beaches on the other hand are vibrant and hosts a range of different water sporting activities like Jet skis, parasailing and all sorts of high-energy thrills you can find in a crowded beach.

A must visit and highly recommended spot among many others include the famous “Mittai Theruvu” (meaning: A Street full of sweets). A series of street vendors exhibits their sweets and eatables and the widely known Halwas with a set of flavours that no other place can offer. No visitor to this place goes back empty handed after trying some of these authentic delicacies. My favourite ones are the fruit flavoured Halwas, they are delicious and melts in your mouth.

To sum it up… A place that I highly recommend for all food-lovers and beach-lovers. Its not a decorated place, but an authentic one that doesn’t attract tourists but welcomes them. Great people, good food and a time well spent along the Malabar coast of Kerala.
